The capital of Australia, Canberra, is the home of the Australian story. It is the home of hidden gems and national attractions, all delivering a range of surprising pleasures.

The city covers an area of a little over 814 square kilometres and is situated close to the Brindabella Ranges. The highest mountain is Mount Majura at 888 metres high, with Mount Taylor, 855 metres, Mount Ainslie, 843 metres, Mount Mugga Mugga at 812 metres, and Black Mountain being 812 metres high also.

In the early years, the eucalypt was the main species of trees in the native forest around the Canberra region, providing resources for domestic purposes. However, by the early 1960s, the forests were closed to logging because of the depletion of the eucalypt and the concern for water quality.

Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra’s iconic feature, was formed by placing a dam across the Molonglo River. The river then flows into the Murrumbidgee, which is northwest of the capital. It then heads northwest towards the town of Yass. Also flowing into the Molonglo and Murrumbidgee are the
Yarralumla and Jerrabomberra Creeks. Prior to the completion of Lake Burley Griffin, the area around the Molonglo River was a flood plain and suffered disastrous flooding.

Canberra’s suburbs have names taken from Aboriginal words, early settlers and former Prime Ministers. Typical names of streets are Dunlop (named after Australian inventors), Duffy (named after Australian reservoirs and dams), and Page Street is named after naturalists and biologists.
The suburbs of Deakin, O’Malley and Yarralumla are where most of the diplomatic missions are located.

If you visit Canberra, you will experience the meaning of Australian identity, history, Indigenous heritage, culture, politics, sport, art, and national flora and fauna.

Canberra is renowned for its extensive pathways, city walking trails and world-class mountain bike tracks. The Namadgi National Park and the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve are pristine wonders where you can witness the beautiful flora in the botanic gardens.

Explore the many mouth-watering restaurants, shops and bars, and chat to local winemakers at their cellar door. And why not bring on the night in Canberra? Its dynamic nightlife always has heaps of action for a lively night out.

From Casino Canberra, community clubs, the traditional RSL, to sporting clubs; all represent the culture of many nations. Or maybe you can catch the limelight at one of numerous great theatres. Take you choice from dance, musical, or plays from international productions, local professional or community and youth theatre.
